Re: #3 of 6

I beg your pardon?
I obtained bids from 4 bidders last year. All parties were sent copies of the bulletin and specific quantities to bid on.
Interestingly enough, the Hong Kong bidder (who does the AIS calendar) figured paper weight at 113 Grams per square meter and he assures me that it is approximately 75# paper. (He figured the coves much heavier and I will get back to him on that.)
Paper qualities can vary considerably in price and surface even at the same weight. Quite frankly, when I have been shown samples of these various papers by our local publishers, I cannot tell them apart. -and we have changed papers a couple of times as a cost saving maneuver. Generally everybody is bidding 80# dull covers with 80# dull interior pages, then offering a 70# interior paper as a cost saving alternative. Some bidders have used the term "commercial" but I have not figured out it's significance.
There is nothing magical about these bids other than figuring out what they left out or included in the service. I am asking questions now, as I did last year. Estimated time of delivery will also be included. Quality of service is subjective and time consuming.
Should I be so foolish as to complete this "voluntary" assignment, again, I shall invite Mr. Morris and Mr. Pries to eat their copies of the spreadsheet at the board meeting, thereby signifying to all present, that they did, indeed, recieve a copy.
Jim, we have been using Bridgetown Printing Company in Portland for approximately 7 years. We had 2 other publishers in Portland before that. I cannot fathom why this tidbit of information is of significance to you. It is actually printed on page one of every bulletin. During those years, the cost of publishing has actually gone down. Part of this is because we have settled into a familiar and predictable pattern of activity. Partly, we have gone to an annual agreement with them rather than quarterly.
Mr. Pries ---"judge not others --". Controlling color quality is of paramount importance . It does not happen by long distance. I cannot imagine doing what we do by mail.

It appeared to most people on the board that you had
not tried very hard to get comparable bids last year
just so that you could make a stronger case for the
printer you wanted. The appearance was of a
sandbagging effort that was a dishonest presentation
to the board. It was an insult to the intelligence of
the board. You have an opportunity to correct this
appearance by being straightforward with a list of
specifications that are presented to this committee
that could then be required of each bidder. If a
bidder does not meet these requirements than the whole
committee can vouch for that fact. I would not wish to
repeat what happened last fall. This was my first
impression of your methods of operation and it is
possible that I have misjudged you. Surely by
fullfilling my request now, you would be on your way
to correcting my first impression. I would be happy to
apologise when I am convinced I see some effort to do
this fairly.

PS I have corrected the e-mail address for the
Suttons.
