RE: Youth Protection Policy and E Memberships

As the token Gen Y here and a Facebook user since 2005 (the 'early' days of
Facebook when it looked and worked nothing like it does now), I feel I need
to weigh in here...

With all respect, this whole issue is quite moot in the grand scheme of
problems facing AIS. Re: John's points...

Yes, agreed.

No. In my non-voting opinion, a Facebook page manager has no obligation to
control who 'likes' or 'fans' (though you are given the option of being able
to delete people from your page's fan roster...but really, deleting youth
members as fans of AIS-related pages? Smacks at exactly the opposite of
what we're trying to accomplish). However, if a club or society has a
Facebook account (like I Kelly Norris or John Jones have 'personal'
accounts), then there's a point. But....Facebook has made it quite clear
that organizations, businesses and the like should only operate under pages
and if set up in the way of 'personal' accounts are subject to deletion.
Rule of thumb--businesses and organizations should not be represented as
"people" with "accounts" but rather as entities with pages. The AIS page is
appropriately setup as a page--no violation of Facebook rules there.
Regarding AIS affiliates (or at least the ones I'm aware of), some are setup
as pages while others are setup as accounts.

The absolute bottom line in all of this is that no matter who chooses to use
Facebook, age 10 or 50, privacy controls are in the hands of the user.
Individual organizations and businesses are not responsible for managing
privacy on behalf of users. Facebook is a grand marketing tool for building
communities--let's recruit youth members (and other members) by doing so!

Bob,
I am clueless as to how Facebook works, but how would you know any 'friend'
was a youth member? They are not identified in any way as a youth member,
just an AIS member, so unless they identified themselves to you as a youth,
you would not have access to that information. I agree that if the youth
has
a Facebook page and joins groups it is not the responsibility of AIS, but
there is the possibility that it COULD happen and the sickos are out
there...just check the website of Megan's Law!

presumably
they would already have their own facebook page. The fact that they have
connected to the AIS page should not be the responsibility of the AIS.
Members
of AIS could be terrible felons but I we do not have a responsibility to
judge
someone who wants to join. It is not AIS publishing data about someone, but
someone putting data about thenselves out, and connecting it to our sites.
The
club sites, including AIS proper and the many affiliate sites are putting
out
information about club activities and iris, not information about individual
youths. To think there is a problem here seems like a really distorted idea
of
they way the world works. I do agree that youth should not be putting some
things on their facebook pages but that is their responsibility and their
parents not ours.
