Re: Section Mini-convention Bulletin coverage

I think the wrong question has been asked. Whenever anypne asks if something should be included in the Bulletin the answer is always a resounding yes. But you can not put everything you would like into the Bulletin. We can only afford so many pages. The real question is what would you leave out to put something in.

We can barely afford to print 4 full issues a year and sometimes we have to cut back on the number of pages because the money just is not there. I can remember January issues especially where there was a fat Bulletin but only one article. As a member I thought why do I get this journal? Are we printing a journal worth saving, or an advertising mailer. There needs to be a balance between intelligent articles and AIS business.

Unfortunately some of our members are computer challenged or we could simply provide a url for a webpage to print out registration forms. To include a form of any kind in the bulletin in this day and age seems a waste of space that could have interesting articles I would like to be able to read.

I think AIS should be supportive of Sections but surely a column talking about an upcoming convention or a quarter page ad, would serve the purpose. I have been complaining for years that many issues of the Bulletin have very little real content. It is not just that it is hard finding authors with something to say, it is also the gobbling up of space by too much business.

We wonder why people do not join plant societies. Part of the reason is they do not feel they get value for their money. Who wants to pay for advertising? There has to be enough meat to make a subscription worthwhile. Now how do we get the word out without being a spendthrift of Bulletin space?--BP
