Re: Registration Images

Dear Ahner;

B B B AISs history has not been one of evolving change. For many years we were
relatively stagnant compared to other plant societies. We wonder why we lost
half our membership. It is only recently that we have begun to catch up. I
understand that with the change in the bulletin and other ongoing changes
people are again getting interested and new members I understand are beginning
to renew.

B B B As PR chair I try to pay attention to the whole horticultural community
and how we compare to other plant societies and herticultural trends. Although
we have suddenly been making progress, we are still about 5 to 10 years behind
other groups on several fronts. I have seen committees formed in AIS and
nothing come of them. For years it seemed like the easiest way to kill an
issue. So yes the motion does begin a small step. But it is a beginning and
not just ruminating.

Officer of the Society.

Change is normal. and to be expected. No person who takes on an AIS
Administrative OfficerB job should be encouraged to think that "they know what
that job will entail."B because throughout the duration of their
tenureB theyB must be prepared to deal withB an evolvingB job description, and
change--some of it sudden, and not all of itB enlightened.

I have suggestB due considerationB be given to the timing ofB any
changeB impacting B a busy office, which IB believe to beB a simple
matterB ofB managing practicalities, and appropriate acknowledgement of the
human resources side of the question.

But while I am at it, I might as well say I don't see what the big rush is on
this. I think any committee of individuals competent to analyze this
questionB and bring forth a recommendationB in which theB Board can have full
confidence should be entitled to take all the time they think they need to
assess theB issue, which isB clearly a complex one.B B

<<As stated the motion is only a beginning, which lays the groundwork for
something more to come later. >>

I don't agreeB that this is the kind of change you canB make up as you go
along.

Furthermore,B as I read it, there is nothing provisional about the motion.
ItB clearly mandates official action on the part of the AIS Registrar, even
ifB said action, as regardsB the representations to the public by the Society'
as ICRA, is ostensibly only to requestB as an adjunct of registration a
photoB forB the Society's files, which photoB the AISB proposesB susequently
to go to town with under claim of right---apparentlyB while it decides how
itB really wants to go about theB business ofB administering the Code
ofB Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants to the internationalB horticultural
community.B

Cordially,

Anner M. Whitehead
