Re: Philanthropy:Estate Giving, Donations and Grants

Bill and Melinda Gates were on Meet the Press last Sunday. They were talking about their Foundation and their strategy for putting the money to good use. If you know anything about the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, you know that it is an unlikely source for the AIS, however the program presented a pretty clear view of a philanthropy model and why it exists.

I suspect that most of you missed MTP and you are unlikely to search out a replay on the internet. Furthermore, unless you put 2 and 2 together and spend the time looking and the motivation driving the Foundation, it is a waste of your time to watch it. So, I'll cut through some of the layers for you now.

1. People or organizations that have money have it because they understand business and were good at making money. 2. Business-oriented people don't spend money. They don't give money away. They invest it wisely. 3. Wise investment requires a strategy. That includes assurances that the money will not be squandered and the desired result has a high probability of happening.

It is rare that major donations come without strings attached. There are a few exceptions. I'm not sure, but I think the Nobel Prize may be an example. Even funding for care of pets after a person dies comes with strings attached. The organization that accepts the funding has a responsibility to use the money as stipulated.

When the workings of an organization are out there for all to see and the organization is actually doing something, they are much more likely to get funding. MoBOT has been mentioned here. MoBOT has a facility, libraries, ongoing programs, paid professional staff, etc. That's the marketing tool for the Estate Giving part of the organization.

Bottom line, the AIS needs to be responsive to the public. It needs to run programs that deliver. It needs to put on the face of a successful organization. When that happens, it is a lot easier to be on the receiving end of philanthropists.

Jim: I think you see some great possibilities here and i am sure our donations person can implement something from all this. Taking a global view, we have many fronts that need work and the more that go forward there will be a synergism that helps the rest. Ultimately strategic planning will be setting goals. If you have goals you can find people to help that buy into those goals and you can also have fund drives to get the monies needed to achieve those goals. But until we understand the vision of where the society is going we have a hard time vocalizing these goals. It is a chicken and egg problem and neither comes first but everything must move forward together. Thanks for sharing these gifting ideas. If i was not an optomist at heart i would not try so hard to get us moving.
