Re: AIS Seal - Reprise

BTW just FYI, my copy of TWOI (third printing of the 1978 version) has the (incorrectly dated) seal on the preface page.

John;

I have been looking for dated materials using the AIS logo as it now appears. The earliest use that I have found is in the Judges Handbook dated 1960. The front cover shows the stylized iris that is incorporated in the logo. Inside on page 1 (page number not printed) the complete logo appears prominently. The founding date is printed as 1920. A "Handbook for Regional Vice Presidents" (dated 1962) also has the stylized iris on the cover and the full logo on the first page, also with the date 1920. AIS letterheads from the 1970s all show the logo with the correct date. When I chaired the 1976 AIS convention we had some small paperweights made showing the logo dated 1920. All of these seem to be identical to the logo in current use. The only incorrectly dated logos I have seen in print are on the dust jackets of the first edition of TWOI (1978) and the second printing (1986). Neither of these volumes appears to have the logo printed within the book itself.

I now am suspecting that the logo has not been revised since its origin in the 1950s, and that the aberrant use of "1921" is an error that somehow escaped detection.

The current seal (or logo) was designed in the mid fifties and first published in Garden Irises in 1959. However that particular version had 1921 as the date instead of 1920 the correct founding date for the society.

Some time afterwards the seal was re-rendered to incorporate the correct date. The 1921 dated version was used as recently as 1978 in the reprint of TWOI. We have copies of the correct one, but I would like to find when it was first published.
