Good morning all,
-- Howie shared a project with me and I will communicate directly with person who inquired of him. The audio problem is a common one and I hope to put together a article for the bulletin. Right now is the peak of my season and I’m knee deep in my own garden work and preparing for visitors. What is the garden term for “bit off more than I can chew,” or “My eyes were bigger than my stomach?” The basic solution is to get a microphone that will connect to the camera and reduce wind and other ambient sounds. I have had the best luck with a wireless microphone system from Saramonic*. It includes 2 transmitters which are clip boxes with microphones. It comes with traditional lavalier mics which can be connected to the boxes. These are the mics which you will see on TV personalities, small clip ons. If wind is still a problem a fuzzy covering will help diffuse it. A DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) or a mirror-less digital will always provide the best image. Newer iPhones and other smart phones (USB-C or LIGHTING connector) are great and always with you. I did put discuss a proposal to buy a set of mics and make it available for lending. I am not sure who I talked about this with (probably Andi) but it was not received positively. I do think that we might encourage local photographers / videographers to consider having a two transmitter set to record high quality interview with our great hybridizers. My dream of doing this has been tempered by some health conditions. But I still hope locals will do this. The sound quality on any video device will only be as good as the sound captured. Wired and directional microphones are and option, but only a wireless connection provides the most mobility and flexibility. It would be absolutely necessary for a garden stroll. (Of course in that case a narrative could be separately recorded.) What would I like the Board to do? I really don’t know who to talk to about this. *Saramonic Blink 500 transmitters and 1 cold shoe (DSLR) Reciever. $199 1 Tranmitter and 1 Reciever (DSLR or UBS-C or LIGHTNING) approx $160 Extra Transmitter (DSLR or USB-C or LIGHTNING) add on approximately $80 Other combinations available. Other brands may be even better, but I find this easy to use!
