Even during tight economic times, it is important to have
a few "luxury" items. Break-even analysis should not be the only criteria for
deciding the merits of a project. Personally, I do not want any binders--however
I think it is a great idea. People who really want them will be somewhat
price-insensitive. For those who are on the fence, price will be a big issue. I
suspect that people who are in this group are a little less
price-sensitive than the broader market.
A few years ago, my little town had financial problems. A
lot of the infrastructure needed repair and we were facing huge challenges. Some
citizens were a little demoralized. The Town sent the clerk to a convention
where one of the vendors had a drawing for street banners. The clerk won the
drawing, but it still was obvious that there would still not be enough banners
to make a positive impact. The Town threw in some more money that naysayers felt
should have been spent on sidewalk repair and the Town had a banner program. It
was incredibly well received. The banners stimulated interest and increased
civic pride. It was part of an "umph" that the Town really needed.
We have a new format for the Bulletin. It is time to
totally support it. The binder really makes sense. The motion should
pass.
I have been known to put my money where my mouth is. I'm
not on the board and I don't have a vote. Once again, I don't want ANY binders.
However, if this organization cannot see that it is a good idea to support
positive changes such as the new Bulletin format, then I can. I will LOAN the
money to invest in the binders to the AIS at no interest to be paid back when
the binders are sold--that is if the Board would agree to it.
(I would donate the money, however I'm in a business
venture with 15 employees that needs some capital investment. It's
more important to me that I keep them employed than it is to see the AIS get on
solid footing)

Subject: RE: [AISdiscuss] Motion
regarding purchase of Magazine Binders
Hi all, I also agree with Paul and Cheryl. If
this motion is passed and the binders are ordered, I'm afraid that we will
have way too many sitting in the storefront for awhile until the demand
meets the number ordered. In the meanwhile, the money spent
on ordering the binders, could have been spent on other important
AIS business. (Remember, that the librarian stills needs a scanner, and
we also need to order the 2010 10 year checklist shortly). Also
remember that we begged the Regions, Affiliates, and others for donations
to help the AIS because we had a $14,000 shortfall.
By ordering the binders at this time we show that we have money for "luxury"
items such as the binders. I really don't think that is the message we
want to be sending out to the AIS membership, in this current economy
and this AIS budget money crunch this year. In my opinion this
motion should be voted down and revisited next year when we have a more higher
interest and a higher number of confirmed orders from the affiliates. Susan
