Hello all,
In response to Jill's
email
we are currently not set up to handle "calling the question" on any
motion via email. I would suggest that we bring this matter up for
discussion at the next board meeting. Additionally, we could also
address the issue of only allowing one motion to be considered at a
time.
Â
The current motion presented by Bob Pries, and seconded by Rita
Gormley, states: "That AIS offer Magazine binders for the bulletin."Â
Â
It is scheduled to go to vote on March 24. If Bob Pries wishes to
withdraw his motion he can second Jill's proposed motion which states:Â
Â
"That the AIS purchase an initial order of 200 Binders according to the
bid obtained by Bob Pries from Rogers Looseleaf ( $5.45 each including
a $150 setup charge plus $.85 each for a shipping box). Storefront to
sell the binders for $12 including shipping."Â
Â
I have specifically mentioned Bob Pries since he would have to withdraw
his original motion before Jill's can be entertained. He could
immediately second Jill's motion at that time. If the new motion is
seconded the "clock" will start anew. If we let the original motion go
to vote than Jill's motion can not be presented until March 31.

If there is a motion on the floor to buy the AIs Bulletin Binders,
I call the question.
Â
If there is NOT a motion about this I make the following motion,
Â
That the AIS purchase an initial order of 200 Binders according to
the bid obtained by Bob Pries from Rogers Looseleaf ( $5.45 each
including a $150 setup charge plus $.85 each for a shipping box).Â
Storefront to sell the binders for $12 including shipping.ÂÂÂ

The Daylily Society offers a coupon with a membership, new,
renewal, or upgrade. The coupon is honred by nuseries that wish to do
so and on the nurseries own terms. This gives the members a discount
but alsoÂdrives business to those that honor it. It means the member
can shop to see what they think is the best value and the nursery can
make sure an order placed does not loose them money and perhaps gains
extra business. I have been suggesting to several people that we really
could use an Iris nurserymans forum that could make suggestions to the
board that could help with programs that are good for the nursery and
also good for AIS. An additional thought was that considering the
amount of fraud on the internet that if this cosortium of nurseryman
could agree to a code of ethics that AIS could promote those Iris
growers that subscribed to the code.

I like the
idea of âAIS member discountâ. From the storefront?
Iâve been
trying to figure out how to do an âAIS member discountâ thru my catalog
but it means checking each membership?
Thereâs got
to be an easier way.

Â
All good questions, hope to
have some answers soon. I do like the idea of preorders. I suspect the
first hundred could go quickly but I am just guessing that the last
might be around for awhile. Since the Market would indicate a value of
these to be $20 each I would suggest pricing them at that, and if we
wanted to give a discount for preorders, or for members, or for the
first year, whatever, we could do that. But establishing what they are
normally worth is important.ÂI would suggest that if we have a
reasonable price we could pay for a large part of the purchase
immediately. Establishing a price is tricky because you want it fair
but still making some profit.

I'm all in favor of these binders, and thanks
to Bob for obtaining the info and a bid.
I do think we need to have these in the
Storefront before the convention.
1) Is there a shipping charge from this
companyÂto the AIS Storefront, or is shipping included?
2) Is there an estimate of mailing charge
from the Storefront to individual purchasers?Â
3) Does the Storefront have sufficient
storage space for 200 binders initially?
4) Would it be possible to take pre-orders
once weÂhave a firm price that includes mailing, so that part of the
investment in the first shipment of binders is quickly replaced, and
numberÂkept on handÂreduced? Or is that more trouble than its worth?

Magazine Binders
I surfed the internet for magazine binders and all the publishers I
found offering these get them from the same source and are very
satisfied with that company. That firm, Rogers Looseleaf provided me
with a bid for 200 binders. They would be dark blue with gold printing
saying: The American Iris Society, Quarterly Bulletin and the insignia
of AIS printed on the spine. There would be a one time charge of $150
for creating the dye. Each unit cost would be $5.45. If we desire
cardboard shipping boxes individually packed they are an additional
$0.85 each
It is true that we have a budget crunch. But we have also put into
place measures to compensate. We will only increase membership by
providing the services expected of a 21st century organization. Efforts
are being made to get us there. It is true this is a minor issue. But
then again if we can not offer services like this for fear of loosing
money than what products can we sell that can bring in money? I believe
this is a modest investment in inventory and could potential make a few
bucks.

Ok, would somebody stick a dollar sign on these things?
Are there options?
I'm sure that quantity plays a role.
Yes, we have to charge enough to get us out of trouble quickly.
