Rita, It is an excellent idea, who's "time has come." Especially the
ability to re-new membership online should start immediately! What does

Tom says - On line memberships and renewals would make great sense. First
he would a receive all the information for the membership file, complete with
e-mail addresses and credit card info already processed (so he would not have
to do that step) and through a "secure site" which he does not have (and it
makes some members nervous), He would then be able to e-mail the new member
list to Ann Violet so she could send "new member packets" by e-mail
(including a pdf of the Basic Iris Culture booklet) thus saving a great deal of
postage.
As far as a "Members Only" section of the AIS website, the benefits included
in a password access section should be thoroughly diagramed out but could
include many items that would virtually cost AIS nothing (PowerPoint programs
for instance) and save a bundle in mailing out certain items (like slide
shows).
By using a "shopping Cart" approach to on-line payments, the AIS Storefront
may also benefit by having the credit cards processed automatically (which
they now do individually on a non-secure site) and the Electronic R&I fees could
be added in also.
The Membership Secretary's office generates a great amount of postage costs
and Tom has been working on sending as many "monthly" reports by e-mail as he
can and is working on the idea of e-mail renewal notices to members in the
future. With on-line memberships, he is assured of getting current e-mail
information in each case.
As you said Jerry, it is a method whose time has come!
