Re: Where oh where is my January Bulletin?
Hi all: I think I mentioned that I would contact our rep at the mailing service. His response follows. This would be the person for Ron to deal with, in following up on any problems. The impression I'm getting lately -- not from Bulletin discussion, but rather from my own experience with the mail in the last 6 weeks -- is that the USPS seems to be in some sort of slump. (Ex.: letters not arriving until weeks after sent, a bill payment mailed on 2/19 which still has not arrived, etc., etc.) In the past, I have always been a great champion of our mail service --- in fact, I was openly skeptical if anyone told me they had mailed me something which I had not received. But none of that really matters... The point is that everyone is correct that we should not meekly accept the extremely poor service on the January issue of the Bulletin. On the other hand, as Dustin mentions (below), the Portland business mailing unit is considered as a model for the country, and the slow-downs happen as the mail gets farther from Portland... On the (other) other hand, however, some people in Tennessee were among the first in the country to receive the issue, so simple distance is NOT the explanation. Most of Dustin's letter follows. Note that he does recommend telling your local post office of the delays, so they can trace the delay back from their end. Bruce:
<I know that California has problems: personally, I think its worse than they are telling us and Im not sure they have ANY plans to fix it. I am told that there is a slight delay (1-3) days because of a heavy mail load and not enough personnel to get it moved. I am starting to have problems in other areas as well areas much closer to home. On a recent mailing, I had customers in central Oregon getting delivery 9 days after we dropped 9 days for a 200 mile trip just isnt okay.
In general, the Portland Business Mail Entry Unit (BMEU) is thought of as a model unit. They are constantly bringing in managers and directors from other locations to show them how to get the mail moved quickly. I think that at this point, however, its probably about time to shoot them an email as well, just to inform them that Im getting complaints from multiple customers about late delivery to many different locations.
Its definitely worth mentioning the problem to the local post offices, though I have found that they usually dont like to sit on anything longer than they have to. They are usually pretty full so they like to get everything delivered as quickly as possible. If they hear of you having a problem, theyre likely to pass the word further up the chain.
Ill keep you copied or forward you on what I come up with.
