Paul Gossett made the following motion and Rita Gormley seconded the
motion on Feb. 3. As such, the motion is open for discussion.
"I move the Scientific Advisory Committee be asked to formulate a written
policy on the collection of wild iris plants with good collection data
and should include any fees be waived by AIS if they are registered.
This policy would then be presented to the AIS Board of Directors for
approval."
I favor this policy but I do question the meaning of "with good collection
data." What may be "good" for one may not be adequate for irisarians,
horticulturists or taxonomists. I believe the committee needs to devote a little
attention to this. I know there are several people in Florida and the Gulf
states who have stepped up their collection efforts faced with the rapidly
diminishing loss of natural habitat there. Sometimes defining what they have
collected is not easy since most are amateurs. Thank you for your attention.
