Re: 2013 AIS Convention

I like the idea of a shorter convention with some educational classes,
judges training, one day of board meetings, possibly a day or maybe a
half day of local gardens, and the Awards Dinner at the end. I think we
could still do the silent auction and Geek Dinner to help raise money. I
agree it would be a much smaller convention, a less expensive convention
for everyone, and a learning activity for all.

I am not sure about the section meetings. I know as being both SLI and
HIPS President, it was hard sometimes to come up with programs for the
section meetings and would some times use the same people several times.
I would like to see the sections do a more educational program instead of
a slide presentation. Tell us more about the type of iris they
specialize in and also what to do to grow nice plants, this way the would
be an educational section meeting. Do other sections have a problem
finding someone to do a program from one year to another?

I would still have to find some local support but, with the local people
not having to do so much work such as preparing large gardens, planting
guest plants, arranging large garden tours and lunches, it would be less
of what they would have to do. The one thing most societies have said,
"we do not have the large gardens and man power to host a convention".

Putting together a convention of any type is a lot of work. I have done
regional meetings, have been on convention committees, and have help put
together the SLI Convention. It is a lot of work for one person to do.
I know from my experience as Convention Liaison, it is work to find a
host site, and then to work with the convention from conception to
completion. I love the job I am doing.

I am working on expanding my committee since the Board gave me the okay
to do so last Fall.

I appreciate all of the comments we have heard so far.

Paul
