Hi All
We are confronted with some huge challenges in the near future.
It is the communication conversion from a paper society to an internet
society.
We can continue to provide services via the internet as we have for almost
a
century using paper. The question becomes - how do we pay for internet
services?
I am watching with great interest as newspapers do the changeover. No
paper
delivery but still having on line current events. I doubt that we are
ready
for a complete changeover but it will probably happen within 5 years.
This is beginning to sound like my next "Editors message" in the July
Bulletin!
Maybe editors will become obsolete? Sigh!!!
Terry

Everyone has some great comments. Continuous Planning is needed always,
but
most importantly right now, we might need a Major Over-hall; to keep up
with
the ever changing, and rapidly changing world we live in today.
The Camellia Society went through a Major Over-hall a couple of years ago,
which has changed the entire Face of the Organization. Just one of the
Successful Ideas they came up with was the establishment of The Camellia
Trail;
spanning the entire country, and creating actual contractual
relationships
with
other organizations and gardens across the country. Some Good Ideas
could
take us successfully well into the future.

Strategic planning should be a continual process. I cringe to think that
strategic planning is delegated to an ad hoc committee. It should be, at
the
very least, a standing committee that addresses not only 3 year goals,
but
10 and 20 year goals. It should be updated regularly (you may recall that
the Soviets were particularly fond of 5 year plans) to make sure that the
organization is on track. Furthermore, the organization should frequently
refer to the plan to make sure that it is working within the guidelines
of
the plan.
Just my 2 cents and now I will go back in my hole.

Hi All
It seems to me that Bonnie Nichols and a committee came up with a
mission
statement when she was treasurer. It sounds like you are trying to build
on
that?
I have had some interesting correspondence from the American Orchid
Society
who is following a very parallel direction because of dropping
membership,
cut back in services. They have a headquarters estate in Florida that
is
being shut down (greenhouses plus storefront) to the public except for a
skeleton crew of maintenance people. This has some reflection on short
term
economy problems that may right themselves later.

The American Iris Society needs to formulate a vision and a strategic
plan
for the next three-year period. This plan would set forth goals and
objectives with timelines for achieving the stated goals and objectives.
An
essential part of such a plan will be the performance of a SWOT
(strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis of the organization. It
has
often been said that if you do not know where you are going you will
never
get there.
Therefore, the AIS President would entertain the following motion:
That the AIS President appoint an ad hoc committee to formulate a
strategic
plan for The American Iris Society. This committee would be: Gary
White,
Chair; Jeanne Clay Plank (Policy and historical perspective); Jill
Bonino
(Finances); Bob Pries (Publicity and Marketing); Debra Straus (RVP 17).
Note: The AIS President is by the Bylaws an ex-officio member of all
committees.
Thank you,
Roy
