Re: LIST OF WINNERS FROM THE AIS INTERNATIONAL IRIS COMPETITION

Hi Marcia,

There is a reason that only 84 out of 123 survived.  These irises were planted in summer of 2018 and the winter of 2019 brought an abnormal amount of rain to the Presby garden area.  Since a good number of the rhizomes we received were in the small to medium range in size,  these plants did not survive.  Hope this answers your question.

Hi Steph,
I just received this from AIStalk. (Maybe you did too.) Congratulations on being in the top 10. I assume you'll be introducing the seedling. Name?
I was surprised that only 84 out of 123 survived.  I expect everything new will survive here. Not bloom, but at least survive. Wonder what's up.

Hello Irisarians around the World,

Five American Iris Society judges visited Presby Memorial Iris Garden last week  to judge the plants sent to Presby for the 2020 International Iris Competition.   In July, 2018, 123 iris varieties were planted.  By May 2021,  84 varieties had survived and 67 were point scored.  Attached is the list of the Top Ten winners out of the 67.

Thank you to all of the hybridizers who sent plants.  The plants bloomed a little later than normal, but the week of May 31 - June 2, 2021, they were putting on a show.  We were able to complete the judging for 3 days in between big rain storms.

Thank you to the judges who made it official:

Jody Nolin,  President of the AIS
Gary White, Immediate Past President of AIS
Andi Rivarola, 1st Vice President
Bonnie Nichols, 2nd Vice President
Kathy Chilton, President of Tall Bearded Iris Society

Tremendous thanks to Nancy Skjei, President of Presby Memorial Iris Gardens for her help and the help of her staff  for supporting this project and keeping the iris very happy.

Very Gratefully,

Jill Bonino
Kathy Chilton
Co-Chairs of the 2020 AIS International Iris Competition
