Re: July Bulletin

Clarence: You know I value your thoughts greatly. I don't go for change just
for the sake of changing. But our membership levels are now what they were
when we had all the bulletins in Black & White. I have been trying to get
across how serious this is and suggest alternatives that might preserve some
integrity. It will be very soon that we may have to reduce the number of
bulletins to 2 or 3 a year or go to a newsletter. Fewer members may mean you
can print fewer bulletins but the cost for each then begins to rise. Raising
membership fees seems impossible and would only make things worse. I have been
trying to sound an alarm so that we might address the membership problem head
on. But even if we did all the right things and turned our downward trajectory
around we may be too late to save what we know and love. I will be leaving the
board soon and I sorry to say I have not left behind a better society but one
deeper in trouble. It seems things must become dire before we can make changes
but by then the choices become rather limited.

It may be that I have lived too long. For 89 years the Bulletin has been the
same size....and I love it that way. Once the month changes to season, expect
before long what now is "July" becomes September...next it will be 3 Bulletins
a year. On social and political issues I am probably the most liberal person
to ever sit on the Board or hold office...but on the Bulletin I am beyond
conservative. Call me a reactionary. And I bet I am not alone. Clarence

Cheryl: I think season would be better also, might save a bit of heartburn,
Good
Idea. I think the Bulletin staff does a marvelous jub with their present
constraints.

Kitty, Bob and everyone,

I also think the Bulletin is the wrong size, and to stir the pot further, I
think it is time we stop with the "month" name and transition to the 'season'
name - Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. We could still aim for the month,
but
this way we would stop the "Where's my ____ (insert month) Bulletin?"

This issue is beautiful!
