RE: Auction of Genus Iris Book - A Decision
As always, our President has made a wise and fair decision that I agree with
completely.

Judy,
I agree 100 percent with your decision. As we discussed, Having the Aril
Society 100 percent responsible for the book is really the only way to go.

Subject: [AISdiscuss] Auction of Genus Iris Book - A Decision
I have been reading all of the discussion regarding the auctioning of the
1913
edition of "The Genus Iris" by W.R. Dykes at the upcoming AIS Silent Auction.
Those who have commented on this issue in the last couple of weeks have been
agreeable to having the book at the auction, although there have been
differing
opinions as to whether AIS should receive a share of the proceeds.
This book was bequeathed to the Aril Society International with the purpose
of
its being sold or auctioned and the proceeds going to that organization. In
the
interest of meeting the spirit of that request and providing a venue
where
interested irisarians have an opportunity to see the book and bid on
it, and as
a side benefit, perhaps drawing more people into the silent
auction room, I
believe that there is a very simple way to handle this.
Therefore, I have made the following decision which I believe will be
"win-win"
for both AIS and ASI..
Space will be provided at the 2012 AIS
Convention Silent Auction for the Aril
Society International to hold its own
auction of this book. Bids will be
accepted during the regular AIS auction
hours. The proceeds from the sale of the
book will belong solely to ASI.
This decision is contingent on ASI agreeing to provide security for and
maintaining conrol of the book at all times during the convention and signing
a
hold harmless agreement that covers the AIS and Region 15 of the AIS.
The decision to allow ASI to hold its own auction in conjunction with the AIS
Silent Auction should not be construed as a precedent for future AIS Silent
Auctions. Similar requests made by other Sections and Cooperating Socities in
the future will be reviewed and the decision made by the AIS President based
on
the facts and circumstances.
