Ackerman?

Hello to all!

Hope this near fall is treating you all great. 

Can anyone tell me the history of the reason the AIS Youth Contest is named the "Ackerman" Essay Contest?

I found a couple of hybridizers named Ackerman...William and Marion, but can't find much history or info on either of them.
