RE: 2013 AIS Convention

I also like the idea of an educational convention, but most attendees want to see gardens - that is what the surveys have told us.  The section members usually hold their board meetings at the conventions, so if they were eliminated how many would attend an educational convention?  Maybe with an educational convention, the gardens could be structured to 'educate' on specific types of irises, and instead of judges' training offer seminars on soil preparation, care, fertilizing, etc. for the spurias, louisianas, medians, tall bearded, etc.  It could include 'education' on species iris, too, of which I have very little knowledge, and would absolutely enjoy learning about.  Paul's idea of the sections hosting could work in this way if a geographic area was chosen and then each section could find a garden in that area.  Maybe an active local society could be in charge of the hotel and busses only.  Contacting a Convention Center Coordinator can help a lot because they know who has the capacity to host that many attendees.  Most cities have these facilitators. It's a thought.
