Re: Re: AIS - Scientific Comm - Research Proposal

Hi All
I look upon this study in a positive way.
What I would like is a SUMMARY REPORT that we could publish in the bulletin. This could refer to the full report for those who read "scientific".

I believe we should do this. That's just an opinion, however; I can't vote.

Dear members of AISDiscuss:
Here is the Scientific Advisory Committee's recommendation on a proposal
from Andrew Wheeler.
This is the same proposal I sent out on AISConfer at the beginning of
the week, but I was corrected that this is not the proper place to begin the
motion to accept.
Now I am presenting it on AISDiscuss -- I do hope it will not be
necessary for it to sit here two weeks worth of discussion before it can move
to
AISVote where it can be acted upon.
This is excellent research which will benefit the iris world.
If any individual wants to read the proposal, I will send it as an
attachment to you upon request. Attachments cannot be sent on AISDiscuss (nor
on
AISConfer).
If you are a voting Board member, sign in on it as promptly as you can
by replying that you've read the recommendation from the committee. Indicate whether or not you wish to bring it to a vote. Someone will need to make the
motion to bring it to a vote -- again.
Please respond. This proposal is at the heart of what we are dedicated
to do as an organization and we should not treat it lightly.
When all voting members of the Board have signed on as having seen the
proposal, I believe it can move -- two weeks on AISDiscuss notwithstanding. I am confident that if I am wrong in this, someone will make sure that I
am corrected, and we will dutifully wait out the full two weeks.

    Jeanne

Dear Officers and voting Members of the AIS Board
I received the following email from Scientific Committee Chairman,
Gary
White.

In a message dated 7/29/07 10:58:36 AM, in2iris@yahoo.com writes:

The Scientific Advisory Committee has reviewed the attached grant proposal,
submitted by Andrew Wheeler, and is unanimously recommending that this
study
be funded by AIS. The funding amount requested by Andrew is $2486.50, and
as
you suggest, I agree that we should round this to $2500.

This is an interesting study in that Andrew will be working to resolve some
long held discussions about the origins of some of our North American
native
irises, and indeed, possibly resolve the questions of whether I.
versicolor,
I. virginica (and it's botanical varieties) are distinct taxa.

As several of the SAC members noted, this study is important to
hybridizers,
botanists, and eventually also to iris gardeners.

As Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee, I fully endorse the view of the other 10 members of my committee in recommending that this study, as
submitted, be funded by AIS. This grant would utilize one-half of the
currently budged $5,000 for the SAC this year. The grant request is a
modest one
(as grant requests go), but offers a good return of information for
investment. I would also assume that there will be subsequent grant
request
proposals
from Andrew for future study in this general area.

Thanks much,
Gary White
Chairman Scientific Advisory Committee
